Pretend Play

In the play, The Velveteen Rabbit, there is a lot of imaginative play.  How do you play pretend at home?

Here are some other stories all about pretend play:

1. Let’s Do Nothing! by Tony Fucile

Frankie and Sal have already played every sport and board game invented, baked and eaten batches of cookies, and painted a zillion pictures. What’s left to do? Nothing! Ten seconds of nothing! Can they do it? Can they act like stone statues in the park? Can they simply hold their breath and not blink an eye? With a wink to the reader and a command of visual humor, feature film animator Tony Fucile demonstrates the Zen-like art of doing nothing...oops! Couldn’t do it! Get it at Changing Hands Bookstore here.

2.  Creating Clever Castles and Cars: Children 3-8 Make their Own Pretend Play Spaces by Mari Rutz Mitchell
Kids explore life in various kinds of self-made "structures," including a spider web, igloo, nest, spaceship, circus tent, and general store. The best part is that kids can use whatever is around the house, classroom, or yard! Get it at Changing Hands here.

3.  Princess Super Kitty by Antoinette Portis
Maggie likes being a kitty. But sometimes that’s not enough. Sometimes a girl has to be super. One little girl transforms herself over and over in this inventive picture book from the bestselling author and illustrator of Not a Box, Antoinette Portis. Once again, Portis shows us that children make ordinary life fun using their imaginations. Get it at Changing Hands Bookstore here.

4.  Toby, Who Are You? By William Steig
Toby is at it again. When Toby and his parents go on a picnic, there's no telling who he'll pretend to be. An owl? A bat? A turtle? Can you guess? One thing is for sure: There's lots of fun in store for Toby -- and you! Get it at Changing Hands Bookstore here.

5. Snow Bears by Martin Waddell
When Mommy Bear comes to look for her baby bears, she finds three snow bears instead. They don’t look quite like her bears, but they do like to slide down the snowy slope and throw snowballs, just like her bears do. . . . Little readers will love being in on the charming snow bear game, illustrated by Sarah Fox-Davies with all the crisp beauty of a snowy day. Get it at Changing Hands here.
